2023 World Metrology Day in Canada

National Research Council of Canada social media campaign for WMD 2023

The 2023 World Metrology Day theme is “Measurements supporting the global food system,” and, to celebrate this, a dedicated social media campaign from the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) will address several related topics. The goal of this campaign is to raise awareness of the vital role of metrology in the food industry and how it helps ensure food safety and security, by showcasing specific examples of the impact and importance of accurate measurements.

The NRC Metrology Research Centre’s Certified Reference Materials are vital tools for ensuring a safe global food system. The Biotoxin Metrology team has a large suite of reference materials that enable the testing of marine biotoxins in shellfish.  Likewise, the Organic Chemical Metrology team has developed reference materials for fungal toxins known as mycotoxins in cereal grains. Due to their potential as sustainable sources of protein, reference powders from insects such as cricket, mealworm and black soldier fly larvae were created by the Inorganic Chemical Metrology team and certified for levels of heavy metals. This work helps to ensure that food producers are using safe materials, which ultimately benefits both producers and consumers.

Another important area of research is the investigation of microplastics in Nunatsiavut in northern Labrador and how they enter the Inuit People’s foodways and lifeways. Scientists from the NRC’s Metrology Research Centre are collaborating with the NRC’s Arctic and Northern Challenge program and the Nunatsiavut Government to identify the main sources of microplastics on shorelines and possible ways to reduce them. This work also helps to inform policies and regulations that protect both consumers and ecosystems.

The use of ionizing radiation to kill pests and pathogens in grocery store staples is another area where metrology plays an important role. The Medical and Industrial Dosimetry team at the NRC’s Metrology Research Centre offers standards and measurement services so irradiation facilities have access to traceable dosimetry references for quality assessment needs and to meet regulatory limits.

2023 World Metrology Day in P.R. China

To celebrate the 24th World Metrology Day (WMD) 2023 in China, the State Administration for Market Regulation (SAMR), the governmental authority in charge of metrology, hosted a national celebration event in Wuhan, Hubei on May 20th, together with the Hubei Province Administration for Market Regulation. Mr Jun YAN, Vice Minister of SAMR, attended this event and delivered a keynote speech. Mr Yuechun SHENG, Vice Governor of Hubei Province, also participated and made welcome remarks.

The Department of Metrology of SAMR is responsible for the organization and coordination of WMD celebration events in China each year. This year they made the Chinese version of the WMD 2023 poster and videos of the Directors’ messages with the support of the National Institute of Metrology, China (NIM).

In addition to the poster with the theme of “measurements supporting the global food system” chosen for this year, another poster with Chinese characteristics, focusing on the special theme of “metrology for Chinese modernization”, was issued and publicized for WMD 2023 (click here to view it in a new window). To further raise metrology awareness among relevant stakeholders and the general public, posters, videos and other publications related to WMD and metrology were widely promoted through various medium channels, including China Central Television (CCTV) News, People’s Daily Online, Guangming Wang, China Quality Daily, SAMR’s and NIM’s social media accounts, etc.

Besides the national event in Wuhan, the Department of Metrology of SAMR called for other local celebration events all over the country. For example, an international exhibition on measurement technology and equipment was jointly held by the China Metrology Association and NIM in Shanghai from May 17th to 19th. For another, the Fujian Province Administration for Market Regulation initiated a series of celebration activities on metrology during WMD, including publicity micro-videos, an e-learning platform, and an awarded metrology knowledge quiz.

It’s well noted that the Chinese names of the extended range of SI prefixes, i.e. ronna (1027) (容[那]), ronto (10-27) (柔[托]), quetta (1030) (昆[它]) and quecto (10-30) (亏[科托]), were officially released during the national celebration event on May 20th, so as to better implement Resolution 3 adopted at the 27th meeting of the CGPM. NIM has coordinated the naming work by establishing a consultation group of over 30 experts from different fields such as metrology, physics, mathematics, computer science, linguistics, translation, etc. The release of the Chinese names of the new SI prefixes will provide official, concise and unified expressions for quantities using orders of magnitude in excess of 1024 used in scientific communities and data science in China.

To celebrate World Metrology Day 2023, Finnish food safety and compliance authorities are informing end users and consumers about the national efforts to ensure food quality, safety and authenticity. The responsibility for food product safety and compliance lies with the companies involved in their production and sale. Behind the scenes, national authorities undertake various measures to maintain a well-regulated food chain and provide trustworthy food information.

The Finnish Food Authority's laboratory ensures the safety of the Finnish food chain by processing samples from all stages, including agricultural inputs, raw materials and finished food products. These samples undergo examination for nutritional factors, quality, safety, authenticity and geographical origin.

Customs is responsible for ensuring the safety and compliance of imported foodstuff. Customs laboratory examines residues of plant protection products in fruits, microbiological quality of vegetables, levels of mycotoxins in grain, authenticity of olive oil, etc.

The Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority monitors the radioactivity of food to ensure its safety for human consumption.

The Finnish Environment Institute analyses harmful substances and environmental toxins, such as mercury and PFAS concentrations in fish.

The Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency (Tukes) oversees the use of measuring instruments by food packers to ensure compliance with quantity checking requirements. Tukes also conducts inspections and approvals for plant protection products on the market. Together with the Regional State Administrative Agencies, Tukes ensures that products sold in stores are weighed using verified scales. The energy and water consumption in food preparation must also be measured with instruments meeting the necessary requirements.

Finally, the National Metrology Institute VTT MIKES plays a crucial role in ensuring the reliability and accuracy of measurements, such as those related to food production and trade.

2023 World Metrology Day in Montenegro

The Bureau of Metrology, on the occasion of marking May 20 - World Metrology Day, organized several promotional activities which included two workshops for stakeholders. The first workshop named “Review of Balances for the Needs of Inspection Authorities” is intended for representatives of the Metrological Inspection. The workshop aimed to demonstrate the procedures for inspecting mass scales.  By organizing this workshop for representatives of the Metrological Inspection, cooperation and transfer of knowledge in the field of inspection of mass scales is improved, which, as concluded, contributes to the safety of food products following the Food Safety Act and international regulations and standards.

The second workshop was organized to strengthen the relationship between the Bureau of Metrology and decision-makers in Montenegro, scientific institutions, industry, and laboratories, as well as highlight the importance of accurate and internationally acceptable measurements. At the workshop, the way to improve the quality of business operations through the Food Safety Act and ISO standards was highlighted. For the promotion of this year's World Metrology Day, a dedicated brochure was printed and can be found at the link: https://metrologija.me/wp-content/uploads/dokumenta/WMD2023_ENG.pdf

On May 20, our representative presented the theme of World Metrology Day in a live program on national television, where the connection between accurate measurement and safety in the food industry was explained to the general public. The statement can be found at the link: https://fb.watch/k-WXild8nE/

Also, printed promotional material was sent to all primary and secondary schools in Montenegro: a poster of the "World Metrology Day", as well as posters with definitions of the International System of Units (SI), posters with new SI prefixes and the Periodic Table of the Elements.

VSL celebrates the importance of Measurements in the Global Food System

May 20th marks World Metrology Day, the annual event that highlights the critical role of measurements in our daily lives. This year, the event focuses on the theme “Measurements supporting the global food system”. From the international trade of grain to online weighing of pre-packaged goods, accurate measurement plays a crucial role in ensuring fairness and transparency.

Food is a major concern for everyone. By the end of 2022, the world population reached 8 billion people. This, together with the depletion of natural resources and the impact of climate change, is posing increasing challenges to the global food system. Measurements play a pivotal role in supporting the global food system. From farm to fork, precise measurements ensure food quality, safety, and fair trade practices.

For example, in agriculture accurate assessments of soil composition and moisture levels help optimise crop growth and prevent overuse of resources. But metrology also plays a vital role in ensuring food safety by enabling precise monitoring of pesticide residues, contaminants, and nutritional values. Additionally, measurements are vital in promoting fair trade and equitable transactions. Precise measurements enable consistent quantification of produce, reducing disputes and ensuring fair prices - for instance by preventing the underfilling of packages or misleading labelling of product quantities.

Pyramid of traceability

To ensure quality, safety and fair trade, food standards must be met. In order to maintain consistent standards, all measurements should adhere to the SI system, which is the internationally recognised metric system encompassing uniform units of measurement for various quantities like distance, mass, speed, and temperature.

VSL

National metrology institutes (NMIs), such as VSL in The Netherlands, manage and develop national primary measurement standards based on these international units. In other words, the SI and the NMIs are the basis for all food measurements. Thus ensuring that all stakeholders, from laboratories and producers to supermarkets and consumers, can rely on a globally traceable and high-quality food system.

Raising awareness for metrology

As we observe World Metrology Day, it is important to acknowledge the indispensable role of accurate measurement in supporting food security, waste reduction and fair trade practices, thereby contributing to a more sustainable and equitable future. The annual event is established to commemorate the signing of the Metre Convention in 1875, and organised by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) and the International Organization of Legal Metrology (OIML), in participation of the national organisations responsible for metrology.

What is NPL doing to help support the global food system?

NPL’s world-class scientific and measurement expertise is helping the agricultural technology industry to adopt high-tech solutions, where traditional agricultural solutions are no longer sufficient, helping to increase productivity whilst reducing resource inputs.

We work on a number of projects in this area, including:

  • Employing a fruit picking robot that checks every fruit for colour, size and blemishes before harvesting it
  • Devising 3D imaging technology to facilitate the breeding of new crop varieties
  • Reducing wastage by sorting and grading potatoes to identify black hearts
  • Monitoring livestock condition to increase the efficiency of rearing animals by precise individual control of feed and tracking their welfare.

In order to carry out this ‘precision agriculture’, NPL use a variety of sensors and techniques ranging from microwaves, optical light, ultrasound, computer vision and machine learning techniques. The work is aimed at producing industrial solutions for immediate field deployment and impact.
